Manila Book Signing

The lovely folks at National Book Store in the Philippines asked me a make a short, personal video inviting everyone to my Manila book signing at Powerbooks Greenbelt this coming Sunday, September 2nd. So I put on my brave face and gave it my best shot!

(Disclaimer: I had a very simple script to memorize and yet somehow it still took me 20 tries to say it without messing up! I can see why people train for years to be on camera! So NOT my strength.)

I'm pretty much packed and ready to go – I just have a few last minute things to do tomorrow before I catch my late-night flight.

Right now I'm downloading the first season of Downton Abbey to my iPad since the first leg of my flight is 15 hours (to Hong Kong), and then it's another 2 hours to Manila, with 3 hours in between. And a friend recommended Sherlock, so I'll give that a whirl, too.

I've also got three books on my Kindle to read (KILL YOU TWICE by Chelsea Cain, GONE GIRL by Gillian Flynn, and I SUCK AT GIRLS by Justin Halpern). And I did download a few magazines to my iPad (but I won't embarrass myself by revealing which girly/gossipy mags they are).

I'll be back the week of September 24th with All The News of All The Things!

Have you been to any far away places?

I'm going international!

My book signing in the Philippines is advertised on the front page of The Philippine Star! Manila friends, it's on Sunday, September 2nd at 4 p.m. at Powerbooks, Greenbelt 4. Hope to see you there!

And copies of the Czech hardcover of CREEP were delivered today! (According to Google translator, Pronásledovaná means "pursued".)

Wowee.

By the way, I need to apologize for not being a great bloggy friend as of late. I can't seem to keep up with everything that's going on these days! I promise I'll be better when I get back from the Philippines in late September.

Just when I think life can't get any more exciting and crazy...

I had the most amazing launch week! FREAK is doing better than I could have hoped. The reviews have been really positive, and I'm so grateful to everyone who bought a copy and told their friends to buy a copy – thank you, thank you, thank you.

And! I have more exciting news. National Book Store in the Philippines (which is a chain of bookstores, much like Chapters Indigo in Canada and Barnes & Noble in the US) has invited me to attend the Manila Book Fair next month! I'm over the moon. I have so much family in the Philippines I haven't seen in years – especially my dad – that of course I could never pass up this chance to launch FREAK in the Philippines and spend time with them all.

I just received a tentative itinerary today and there are lots of things scheduled for me, including media interviews (TV, radio, newspaper – so nervous already!), book signings, and dinners. It looks like I'll be giving a talk at the book fair as well. (Crap, I'm going to have to buy nicer clothes.)

And in between all that, there will time to spend with my family, some of whom live in a different province. And my dad is taking me to Hong Kong for a couple of days!

I'll be gone for three weeks total, leaving on August 31st and returning on September 21st. I'll try and blog if I can, but for sure I'll be on Twitter and Facebook the whole time, with updates and hopefully lots of photos, so please follow me there.

I know I'm repeating myself, but I want to thank you all so much for your support. Thanks for reading my blog for the last three and half years, and thanks for always cheering me on.

I really believe it takes a village to do great things, and my village rocks. I'm a lucky girl.

Photo from way back! (Click to enlarge.) I love how my dad looks better than I do at my grade eight graduation.

Get your FREAK on!

Today's the day! Happy book birthday, FREAK!

The reviews are rolling in . . .

"Taut and fraught with surprise twists, Hillier’s thriller is addictive."

"Hillier adopts the style of the great fifties noir authors . . . if your tastes run to Cornell Woolrich or Jim Thompson, Hillier is what you’ve been waiting for."

"Freak is difficult to put down, and enjoyable on some primal level . . . "
~ National Post

"Freak is a 5 star thriller and I recommend it . . . when is the next one coming out, Hillier?"
~ Suspense magazine

"Readers beware: what flows through these pages is not always easy to stomach, but I dare you to take your eyes off the page. The chilling descriptions are a testament to Hillier's talent as a thriller writer."
~ Chapters Indigo Fiction Blog

"Freak is an exhilarating serial killer thriller . . . The storyline is fast-paced from the moment Jerry sees the message on the hooker's torso and never slows down, with a shocking final twist . . . "
~ Gumshoe Review magazine

"[Hillier's] experience, and dedication to the genre, is probably what makes her so good at hitting all the right suspense beats. But it's more than just that. An innate writing talent also exists, doubling the page-turning pleasure."
~ Horror.com

"This book freaked me out – in a good way. In a word, “frightening”. Jennifer Hillier creates a truly scary killer in Abby Maddox, the female version of Hannibal Lecter – smart, cunning and wickedly evil. I was engrossed on page one, couldn’t put the book down and breathless at the ending. Be prepared for late nights reading. Then sleep with the lights on – if you can. This one blew me away."
~ Robert Dugoni, New York Times bestselling author

Somebody pinch me. I still can't believe this is my life.
